UNIVERSITY OF HOUSTON REPORT

The University of Houston track and field team kicked off its home meet schedule with the Leonard Hilton Memorial Invitational at Yeoman Field Houston inside the Athletics/Alumni Center on Friday. Freshman Isaac Williams tied the school record in the men's 60m hurdles with a time of 7.81.

The Cougars swept the men's and women's weight throw. Senior Rick Fenton threw 18.31m (60' 1") for the third best time in program history. Fenton now hold the top-three marks on the all-time list. For the women, junior Emily Nnokwam had a throw of 17.13m (56' 2.5"). Teammate Nicole Benton finished with a personal best of 16.75m (54' 11.5") to place third overall and fifth in school history.

Three Cougars placed in the top-10 in the women's shot put. Sophomore Samatha Taylor joined Fenton as a gold medalist with a 14.30m (46' 11") throw, while Benton (12.57m; 41' 3") and junior Cassie Wiley (10.89m; 35' 8.75") placed fourth and 10th respectively.

In the long jump, Houston posted three personal best. Freshman Sean Spiehler improved with a length of 6.98m (22' 11"). For the women, junior Ngozi Onwumere finished fifth overall with a jump of 5.70m (18' 8.5"). Redshirt freshman Angelica Thompson followed in 10th with a 5.29m (17' 4.25") leap. Onwumere also placed second in the women's 200m (25.03).

Sophomore John Horton took home a second-place finish in the men's triple jump after leaping 15.15m (49' 8.5"). Junior Malcolm Howard rounded out the top-five with a 14.22m (46' 8") jump.

Freshman Joseph Beck finished second overall after posting a personal best (5.00m; 16' 4.75") in the men's pole vault. He was followed by twin brothers, Jacob (4.20m; 13' 9.25") and Zachary Fifi (4.00m; 13' 1.5"), who placed sixth and seventh overall.

In her first race for the Cougars, the Budapest, Hungary native, Anasztazia Nguyen took home a fourth-place finish in the women's 60m with a time of 7.67. On the men's side, freshman Leshon Collins ran the second fastest time (6.67) in program history to place second overall. Collins finished .02 behind Stanford Routt's 2004 school record.

Freshman Eric Futch is no stranger to winning the gold. The Darby, Pa. native, and Penn Wood High product, topped the men's 400m with a time of 47.92. For the women, sophomore Sade-Mariah Greenidge crossed the finish line at the 8.44 mark to place second overall in the 60m hurdles.

Despite coming in second, freshman Isaac Williams tied the men's 60m-hurdles when he clocked a personal best of 7.81. Williams holds the record with track and field alumni Andrew Carruthers and Darius Pemberton. Carruthers and Pemberton, both captured the school record in the 2005 season.

UTSA REPORT

The UTSA women registered three victories and a total of nine podium finishes at Friday's Leonard Hilton Memorial.

Leading the way was senior triple jumper Eboni Johnson, who was victorious for the second consecutive week. The Channelview native skipped to a measurement of 39-11 ¼ (12.17m), which was a four-inch improvement from last weekend's winning mark at the Texas A&M 12-Team Invitational. Johnson defeated Texas Southern's Terralyn Johnson by more than a foot for the second meet title of her career.

Meanwhile, junior Grace Williamson won the 800 meters after breaking the tape in 2:15.17. That was a second faster than Rice's Keltie John and classmate Nina Herrera finished two spots behind her teammate with a personal-best time of 2:17.34. It marked Williamson's second gold medal in three outings this year and the third championship of her three-year career.

The Roadrunners' other triumph of the event came in the distance medley relay. Junior Alyssa Diaz, sophomore Stephanie Wangui, Herrera and junior Samantha Fish passed the baton in a season-best 12:08.89, which was good for an eight-second victory against Rice's quartet of runners.

UTSA added three runner-up performances in field competition.

Senior Katie Bragg placed second in the weight throw with a season-long toss of 55-11 (17.04m), while junior Madeline Hurdt picked up a gold medal in the shot put with a PR of 46-2 (14.07m). Sophomore Whitney Flannel recorded the squad's other second-place effort with a career-best clearance of 5-7 (1.70m) in the high jump.

The team's other podium finishes came in distance events, as Diaz was third in the mile (PR 5:01.51) and senior Jessica Bitterly earned a bronze in the 5k (18:41.33).

Sophomore Shahira Ehiemua had a strong day in the 60m. The Missouri City native raced to the second-fastest qualifying time (7.57) before peeling off the top mark of the semifinals (PR 7.50/currently tops WAC season leaderboard). She did not compete in the evening final.

The Pflugerville native cleared 6-10 ¾ (2.10m) in his lone attempt at the height and edged junior teammate Kerry Thompson, who also got over the bar in 6-10 ¾, for the gold medal due to fewer misses. It was Benford's third victory in as many meets this season and the ninth of his illustrious career.

Meanwhile, fellow senior All-American Richard Garrett Jr. also was victorious, as he won the ninth shot put title of his career with a measurement of 60-5 ¾ (18.43m), which was nearly six feet better than his closest competitor. Sophomore Andrew Akens was two spots behind his teammate following his mark of 52-2 ¾ (16.22m).

Classmate Taylor Reed won a pole vault crown for the second time this year. The Tyler native recorded a clearance of 16-4 ¾ (5.00m) in his first and only attempt at the height and tied Houston's Joseph Beck for the top spot on the leaderboard. Like Benford, he was awarded the gold medal due to fewer misses.

The Roadrunners' other triumph of the event came in the distance medley relay. The junior quartet of Nathan Collier, Chrisshun Jamerson, Joshua Smith and Mike Medrano passed the baton in 10:30.98, which was good for a nearly half-second victory against Rice.

Sophomore Christopher Hall added a runner-up performance in the 200 meters after crossing the line in 22.86, while senior Roscoe Robinson also collected a silver medal (23-0 ¾/7.03m) in the long jump when Sam Houston State's Charles White edged him by just two-and-three-quarter inches on his sixth and final attempt of the competition.

UTSA's other medal came from the 1,600m relay of senior Keyunta Hayes, Hall, senior Darryl Wyrick and freshman Jumarcus Shelvin. The foursome circled the Bill Yeoman Fieldhouse oval eight times in 3:20.50, which was good for third place.

Collier posted the fastest time by a collegian, a personal-best 1:55.55, in a fifth-place performance in the 800m.

The Roadrunners will return to Houston next weekend for the Howie Ryan Invitational & Multis. The two-day meet gets underway on Friday, Jan. 25.

RICE REPORT

Tyneisha McCoy was the second collegian in the 400m, and anchored the 4x400m relay that finished second as Rice's women's track and field squad put on a strong performance at UH's Leonard Hilton Classic at the Athletics/Alumni Center.

"We're continuing to grow and improve," said Rice Head Coach Jim Bevan. "It was a better performance for us. I'm excited for next week's meet at UH, where we should have a full team going."

McCoy finished fourth overall and second among collegians in the 400m with a 57.99. Texas' Courtney Okolo was the only college runner to finish ahead of McCoy.

The Rice team in the 4x400 finished fourth, led off by Precious Knighton, followed by Imani Mark, who posted her fastest indoor split in that event. Leslie Schilsky gave the baton to McCoy, who took the Owls from second place to winning the section going away with a time of 3:56.05.

Allie Schaich and Sarah Mason ran personal bests in the mile, finishing with times of 5:02.52 and 5:04.75 respectively.

Casie Wilson set a personal best in the pole vault clearing a height of 3.55 meters.

Halsey Fowler led off the distance medley relay that finished second with an outstanding first leg, and was followed up by Chioma Nwankwo, Meredith Gamble, who competed for the first time in two years, and Allie Schiaich finished the relay finishing second.

Rice's men's track team swept the podium in the mile run, and took five out of the top six spots, to highlight a strong performance at the Leonard Hilton Invitational on the campus of the University of Houston.

"The team did very well, overall," said Rice head coach Jon Warren. "The team had large improvements in this meet and is moving in the direction we want to move."

Harry Sagel won the mile with a time of 4:19.54, coming in just 21 hundredths of a second of teammate Alex Weinheimer, who was only two-hundredths of a second faster than Travis Roberts, who posted a 4:19.77. John Cavallo came in fifth with a time of 4:21.35, and James llamas came in fifth with a time of 4:25.11.

Alex Zinchenko finished second in the shot put with a throw of 16.61 meters.

The Owls finished second in the distance medley, with Weinheimer, Donte Moore, Sagel and Roberts running for the Owls.

Clayton Chaney posted a fine all-around performance led with a high jump of 2.00 meters. He posted a 7.15 second mark in the 60 m semifinal and a shot put mark of 13.12 meters.

HOUSTON BAPTIST REPORT

Matt Perri smashed the HBU men's indoor 5,000-meters record and Morgan Pressley added a pair of school records in the women's horizontal jumps Friday to lead the Houston Baptist track and field squads to their best season-opener ever at the Leonard Hilton Memorial meet at the University of Houston's Yeoman Fieldhouse.

Perri won the 25-lap race in 14:48.68 to slice almost 12 seconds off the previous Husky best of 15:00.25, set in 2010 by Maximo Mendoza. Pressley finished fourth overall in the long jump with a best of 5.71 meters/18-9 to add more than six inches to her existing HBU record, and she also triple jumped 11.41m/37-5.25 to take sixth and improve her own school record by almost five inches.

"This is without a doubt the best meet we have ever had to open an indoor season," said head coach Theresa Fuqua. "In addition to the numerous school records set, we had a bunch of very impressive efforts that show we are a far better team than in the past five years."

Jade Penick uncorked the first record performance of the day with her 16.06m/52-8.25 in the 20-pound weight throw to place sixth, and Jessica Whitt slashed her lifetime best in the mile to 5:01.65 to take fourth and knock almost seven seconds off the record set by Raquel Tidwell in 2010.

Pressley also anchored the Huskies to a 3:57.01 to win their section of the 4x400 and place sixth overall. Whitt helped the distance medley relay to fourth place at 12:38.38.

In other men's track events, Anthony Aguinaga was fourth in the mile at 4:20.13 and LaDarien Harris was fifth in the 200 at 23.05. The distance medley relay took third, while the 4x400 was sixth with a solid 3:25.90 to win their heat.

Freshman Garrison Fick spanned 13.93m/45-8.5 for sixth in the triple jump and Jake Adkins was fifth in the shot put with a toss of 15.00m/49-2.5. Jarrett Gilliam nabbed sixth in the 35-pound weight throw with an effort of 15.35/50-4.5.
