2008 TAPPS State Championships
October 18, Waco
Thanks to Jimmy Stuart for the results.
In the 1A girls division, Kyrsten Budde took
the lead and never looked back. Her lead eventually stretched to 50
seconds at the finish over Angela Royer with Audrey Alambar finishing
third. Alambar's Christ the King (Lubbock) easily won the team title over
Spring Providence Classical. |

The 1A boys race was a repeat of the girls race
as Dustin Sandoval ran away from the field. Providence Classical used the
2-3 punch of Caleb Franzmann and Landon Martin (who broke open a 3-man
race for third near the end) to easily win the team championship. |

The 2A boys race showed signs of being a close
one as Vincent Weir and Gregory Becker ran together, but around the 3000m
mark Weir pulled away for a convincing win with David Bayless finishing
third. Weir and Becker's Cambridge School thoroughly dominated the
competition as they won the state championship by 60 points. |

The 3A girls race was one of the most exciting
of the day as Ratliff sisters, Rebecca and Michelle ran side by side until
Rebecca pulled away in the final straightaway. Ginny Murphy held off
Stephanie Wright for third place. The Ratliff's 1-2 punch was not enough
for Amarillo San Jacinto Christian to hold of Ovilla Christian for the
championship. |

The 3A boys race was one of the closest of the
day. At 2000m five runners were in contention. By 3000m Kevin Hutchinson
and Sten Stray-Gunderson had pulled away and were running side-by-side
with Kevin Frost and Jacob Pickle falling back in 4th and 5th places. At
4000m Hutchinson began to pull away and looked like he had an easy win,
but Frost had other ideas. Steadily he closed the gap on the leaders with
Stray-Gunderson also refusing the let Hutchinson get too far ahead. With
300m to go Frost had moved into second and had his sights on the leader,
but Hutchinson's strong finish down the stretch earned him the state
title. Ovilla Christian easily won the team championship by nearly 70
points. |

Katie Berry simply ran away and hid from the 4A
girls field. Her 84-second win was easily the most impressive performance
of the day. While Berry was running alone, Colleen O'Neill, Regina
Salinas, and Megan Hodge all turned into the final stretch together.
O'Neill was able to pull away early, but Salinas and Hodge battled all the
way down the final 200m before Salinas pulled away in the final meters.
The team title was also close and Corpus Christi Incarnate Word held off
Tyler T. K. Gorman. |

Peter Martin (San Antonio Christian) turned the 4A boys race into another
yawner with his strong win by 30 seconds over Corpus Christi Incarnate Word's
Matt Busker and David Heredia. That 2-3 punch proved to be too much for the rest
of the field as Incarnate Word won the team title by 30 points over Houston Awty
International.
Shannon Klenke (Houston Duchesne Academy) won a nailbiter in the 5A girls
race over Caitlin Keen (Fort Worth Nolan Catholic) with Melanie Wilcox (Dallas
Ursuline) moving up through the field to finish third. Dallas Ursuline Academy
won the team title over Dallas Bishop Lynch.
A unique strategy for Austin St. Michaels' Dennis Hodapp enabled him to take
a solid win over a very competitive field. On every downhill, Hodapp surged on
his fellow competitors and steadily opened up more ground. Nolan Catholic's
Chris Flaherty and Thomas Bobbitt finished second and third, but that was not
enough to hold off the impressive depth of St, Michaels for the team
championship. |
