2010 North Mesquite Stallion StampedeSeptember 11, Samuell Farm, Mesquite Thanks to Richard Naylor for this report.
This was my first visit to Samuell Farm since 1976 (!) and I need to go back more often. Despite much of the course being underwater just 48 hours before resulting in some re-routing, everything seemed in surprisingly good shape after Wednesday's torrential rainfall. Overcast skies and a southern breeze for much of the morning helped lessen the overpowering warm and humid conditions. The first race of the day saw Highland Park freshman Natalie Rathjen dominate this field just as she did last week. Jerry Sutterfield's 4A Highland Park is definitely poised to regain the state championship contender form that was missing a bit in recent years with a 22-34 point win over Steve Telaneus' always powerful Lewisville Marcus team. It's going to be a fun year for Coach Sutterfield and Scots' fans. Ursuline Academy swept the top four places and eased to an almost perfect 18-point score in the 4A girls' race. Ursuline's Becca Knott made a move with 800m left to pull away from teammates Kennedi Henneberger and Grace Meyer in the day's most exciting race as all three finished within 3 seconds. Marcus' Sean Canavin looked very strong in separating from the field for a 17-second win over a North Mesquite's Johnny Watson in the 5A race. Marcus outdistanced Randy Adair's Highland Park squad to win the boys race with Mesquite Poteet right behind in third place. Rockwall's Joel Gibbs nipped Red Oak's Alec Saucedo by two seconds to win the 4A race. Gibbs' Yellowjacket teammates, coached by Toby Howell, put scored five of the top 11 places to easily win the team title.
